Friend's of Park Wood, Hellingly

Park Wood Hellingly: Park Wood is 60 hectares (150 acres) of ancient, semi-natural woodland and is set aside as a Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI). The wood has many large oak trees and significant areas of sweet chestnut, hazel, hornbeam and ash.

There are many different wild flowers including wood anemones, violets and orchids. Bluebells cover the woodland floor in spring. You can see ferns and mosses in damper areas bordering the stream and in the autumn you can find nearly 100 species of fungi.

The wildlife in Park Wood includes a wide range of insects, butterflies, birds, reptiles and mammals including rare dormice and nine species of bat.

Aim of the Friends Group: To maintain and preserve the flora and fauna of this precious Ancient Woodland and to ensure free community access for present and future generations to enjoy in perpetuity.
