Description
Brighton Rock Housing Co-operative was first established in 1987. The co-op consists of three terraced houses (with four bedrooms in each house, a large living room, kitchen, bathroom, and bike shed). The co-op also has a large garden that is shared between the three houses.
Brighton Rock subscribes to the values and principles of the international co-operative movement. The Statement on the Co-operative Identity states that a co-operative is an "autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically-controlled enterprise."
Brighton Rock is a member of CHIBAH - a network of local co-operatives that promotes co-operative housing in Brighton and Hove.
CHIBAH's purpose is to house both individuals and families who are in need of low-rent, co-operatively managed housing. CHIBAH also undertakes a programme of permanent stock development.
CHIBAH currently has seven member housing co-operatives. CHIBAH works with representative bodies on the local and national scene, principally the Confederation of Co-operative Housing (CCH) and the Community Voluntary Sector Forum (CVSF)
