The Educational Psychology Service (EPS) focuses primarily on the learning, social and emotional development of children & young people aged 0-25 years, within their educational setting.
The work of an educational psychologist can either be directly with a child, or group of children or indirectly through their work with parents/carers, teachers and other professionals. Indirect work often involves research, training, consultation and discussion either at the individual or systems level. Direct work can involve delivering a psychological intervention to an individual child or group but usually involves some form of assessment.
This may include:
Recommendations are then made or co-produced to determine the most appropriate educational, psychological or therapeutic strategies and interventions to help the child or young person and the educational setting to overcome any barriers to learning and social inclusion.
Educational psychologists also undertake a statutory function in relation to the assessment of those children and young people who have the most severe and complex needs.
Educational psychologists provide psychological support to early years settings, schools and colleges in times of unexpected bereavement or other traumatic events.
The Educational Psychology Service offers core activities which are free to schools and colleges:
Schools and colleges can purchase additional Educational Psychology time to provide training and support for staff and parents/carers as well as assessment and intervention for individual children and young people.
Schools should contact their link Educational Psychologist (EP)
Parents/carers should be encouraged to speak with their child or young person’s teacher or the school or college SENCo (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator).
