A community hub bringing people together for sport, friendship and connection
If you’ve ever wandered around the Priory Ruins in Lewes, you may have heard the gentle sound of tennis racquets hitting balls, and perhaps the odd whoop or holler as a shot goes awry! Running the length of the ruins stands the Southdown Sports Club, a haven for tennis, squash and hockey enthusiasts of all ages. Something of a community hub, the Southdown Club represents a lot more than sport to its members – it’s about fun, friendship, health and connection, and is a place for everyone, no matter your age or ability.
With a picturesque backdrop of the South Downs, this lively sports club offers activities, facilities, and membership options to suit your fitness needs. Whether you are looking to improve your tennis game, enjoy a post-work game of squash, pick up your hockey stick again, or try your hand at pickleball, Southdown Sports Club has something for everyone. The club's extensive facilities comprise 13 tennis courts including all-weather clay, grass and hard courts, two covered courts in winter, squash courts, hockey astro, and a gym. There is also the Southdown Café with licensed bar where members and friends can unwind and socialize after a game. Physiotherapy, yoga, and Pilates classes are also on offer.
A warm welcome is guaranteed
The Club works hard at helping new members to meet other players, and provides plenty of opportunities to play tennis. It can feel daunting joining a tennis club where you don’t know anyone, so they now have a “buddy” scheme, where new members are allocated an established member who arranges to meet up, find out what you’re looking for from the club, and introduces you to other players and groups. There is a variety of group social and coaching sessions throughout the week, daytime, evenings and weekends, where you can mix in and meet other players of a similar ability, improve your game and build confidence.
In addition to superb amenities and a warm welcome, Southdown Sports Club boasts a team of professional tennis coaches who are committed to helping you get the most from your game. From Beginners and Back to Tennis coaching courses (available to non-members), to Intermediate and Advanced coaching sessions, cardio tennis for fitness, social tennis on weekdays and weekends, plus the opportunity to play competitively in league matches, there are many ways to get on court and play your best game. The Club’s tennis camps during school holidays are also very popular with families.
Southdown Sports Club is not only a place to exercise, but a community hub where members can come together and make friends. Whether you are an experienced tennis, squash, or hockey player or a beginner looking to try out a new hobby, this welcoming club is the perfect place in which to stay active and healthy.
