We are national charity whose local volunteers in Newhaven keep a visual watch out to sea and along the coast.
NCI Newhaven is based in the former coastguard lookout tower that sits above Newhaven Fort. It would appeal to those interested in the sea and those who use the coastline. We operate in 3 or 4 hour watches from 0800 until 2000 in the summer and until sunset in the winter.
We would like volunteers to be able to commit to undertaking 3 watches a month, or more if you have the time.
There is no upper age limit for volunteers but watchkeepers do need to be over 18.
No previous maritime experience is necessary. Full training is provided to support you to become a qualified watchkeeper.
Watchkeepers have to wear a uniform which the member will have to purchase, for a small cost, themselves after the induction period. Fund-raising and social events are held.
We are always looking for new volunteers to become watchkeepers. If you are interested but feel you may not be able to commit to undertaking regular watches then you may be interested in becoming one of our supporters who can assist with tasks around the station or by helping out at fundraising or water safety events.
If you think either of these volunteering opportunities might be of interest give us a call or drop us an e-mail and we can arrange for you to come and visit us for a chat.
